Telluride Mushroom Festival Weekend

Hello! Telluride, Colorado, is a destination like no other, in a high mountain valley at the end of a box canyon. Last weekend we drove for more than six hours one way to attend the 3rd annual Telluride Culinary and Arts Festival. The drive over the mountains was long but fun, stopping to shop for antiques in a few small towns. We arrived on Friday afternoon to a condo in Mountain Village, from there we took the ski area gondola down into town for a four-stop Progressive Dinner, ending up back in the village. Our favorite course was Seared Hawaiian Walu with Lemon Spaetzle, chanterelle mushrooms and fennel, served with lobster brown emulsion at Allred's, halfway down the mountain.
On Saturday, we went into town for breakfast at Las Montanas. The huevos rancheros with tomatillo green chili was great. Later that afternoon Geri, my wife, attended a cooking demonstration while I photographed the Telluride Mushroom Festival parade, which turned out to be a major highlight of the weekend for me.
Another unexpected fun stop was in Ridgway, about 20 miles from Telluride. Geri stopped to shop for antiques while I checked out artist studios at the old Ridgeway Fire Station. I hope you enjoy the story of our weekend get away.
Cheers, Kent

Our Gardens

Hello, today I would like to remind everyone to keep your cameras handy as life and many great moments happen all around us in our homes, yards, gardens and neighborhoods. Being prepared to capture natural pictures of our daily life such as when the neighborhood fox pays a visit or a neighbors dog stops to rest in your front yard or when my cat Chinle decides to get a drink from the watering can on the back porch. Sometimes its the quality of light that attract us, maybe its the new zen water feature in the garden, etc.
For me photographing my yard, gardens and neighborhood is an on going project because it combines several of my farvorite elements, gardening, photography, family, pets, friends, and a sense of community. I hope you enjoy these images and remember each and everyone is born from a passion in my heart.
Cheers, Kent

Summer 10th Mountain Hut Trip

Hello again,
For those of you who don't know me, this story might give you a little glimpse into my love of all things outdoors. In this case it's a summer hut trip to the Peter Estin Hut near Eagle, Colorado at 11,200 feet elevation. Usually we go on winter trips to the many different huts in the system on skis and/or snowshoes. Going to mountain huts is something I've been doing for about 25 years now! I also love backpacking and camping. Staying in a hut with 16 wonderful friends in the middle of the summer blew me away. First of all, we only had to hike about a 1/2 mile uphill, plus, there was a cart to haul coolers, etc. In the winter we carry everything we need on our backs for 6-10 miles! Even living in Denver I forget how beautiful the high country is during the different seasons. Seeing fields of wild flowers blooming with the West Elk Mountain Range stretched across the horizon was truly breathtaking and not just because of the elevation.
Having a warm hut to hangout in when the weather rolls in is a huge plus, rather than crawling into your tent for hours. I had a blast playing games that I wouldn't normally do or play. In fact, our entry into the hut's log book described our visit as the Summer X-Games.
We started with the easy stuff, horseshoes and ring toss. Then made our own golf course, only 3-holes. It was the funniest round of golf I have ever played including playing in the snow. We even used the cart to haul a cooler of beer and cocktails around with us.
After lunch we drove a couple of miles away to shoot guns. We did a little safety course for those of us who aren't gun owners.
We set up targets and also threw clay pigeons. I actually did pretty well considering I had maybe fired a shotgun once in my life. Now I have a couple of new bruises on my shoulder to show for my efforts.
