The Not So Ordinary House

Last Sunday on our way home from Basalt, we stopped at our friends' Jimmy and Rosie's new and not so ordinary house about six miles south of Glenwood Springs. Rosie met us at the bottom of the driveway which is a steep, quarter-mile adventure, pretty much straight up. In fact, my Subaru couldn't climb it with a couple of inches of fresh snow.
It's a custom-designed home that the architect named 'The Not So Ordinary House'. Jimmy and Rosie have spent the past year building it, making small, but smart changes to the design to fit the property, functionality and style. They did a great job of balancing form and function.
After a quick tour outside, we took off our snow boots and went inside for brunch. Brunch with Rosie is a first-class dining experience. In one of her many careers, she worked as chef. Her homemade quiche was so good I could not pass up seconds. Champagne toasts and a tour of the house from top to bottom followed.
Truth be told, the main purpose of our visit was to document their house and create a slideshow so friends and family could see it. You know who you are!
Jimmy is a plumber by trade; he designed and built a radiant heat system to coordinate with a wood burning stove. The kitchen has commerical grade appliances, with beautiful countertops, a interestingly-shaped granite island affectionately named "the amoeba" and hickory cabinets. Jimmy has a two-car, heated garage, with loft and workshop. But no car will ever be garaged there!
There are two bedrooms, two baths and an office. The basement isn't finished yet, but it will have a wine cellar for homemade wine and beer.
The rooflines' steep angle is reflected thoughout the lines of the house including the mailbox and front door. If you would like to see a slideshow CLICK HERE: The Not So Ordinary House

Skiing Snowmass with the Broome family

Last Saturday Geri and I skiied Snowmass Mountain with our friends Margie and Paul Broome of Basalt, joined by their daughter, Sara. This marked our first day of skiing this season. We took it pretty easy, doing top to bottom runs without a lot of stopping. I did my best to keep up with the alpine skiers on my telemark skis. It was a beautiful, sunny day although it wasn't too warm. The first photo features the Maroon Bells from the top of Elk Camp, and the next two images are of Paul heading off to ski The Wall - a double black diamond area that you access by foot. The rest of us weren't up to skiing the steep stuff. If you look closely at the picture of Margie wearing goggles, you can see me hiding behind my camera. Sara and her parents clown around in the next picture before our last run of the day. We had a tailgate party in the parking lot before heading for the hot tub and Sara asked me to take a picture of her with her new snowboard.
Stay tuned for more skiing adventures.
Cheers, Kent

Pictures of the Year 2006

The year 2006 took me beyond my wildest dreams with weddings, engagements, births, deaths, travels, floods, festivals, events, holidays, concerts, friends, family, love, sports, fishing, food, photography, weather, blogging and life in general.
A common thread to realizing my dreams started with the birth of this blog last April. Blogging pushed me to do things that I might not have done or photographed to share with you.
Capturing the slices of life has been a big part of my world since I was in a high school photography class and my subjects were usually found moments in time. Some people might call it street photography or photojournalism.
Now, 30 years later I still enjoy keeping a camera handy to motivate me to experience life a little deeper by documenting the good, bad, ugly and beautiful things that happen all around us everyday.

Alexandra and Jay

It's still dipping below zero every night here in Denver. Life goes on even in cold weather and some of us actually enjoy and celebrate winter. Yesterday, while the temperature was above zero, Alexandra and her fiance' Jay, wanted to do their engagement photo session in downtown Denver. They were both living downtown when they met, enjoy walking in the snow and like to have cocktails in the lobby of the Brown Palace Hotel so that's where we got the party started. Oh, and Alexandra wanted to include her 5 1/2 month old boxer puppy, Addy. If you would like to see a slideshow CLICK HERE: Alexandra and Jay All of our slideshows require flash player. Ice + Snow

While most people would prefer to stay inside when the weather outside is frighteningly cold, I put on warm clothes and get going. In fact the Ice + Snow festival presented by the Museum of Outdoor Arts was postponed because of the Blizzard of 2006. The party finally took place and it was still cold as you would expect for an ice and snow event.
Guests dressed in costumes, bands played, fire dancers performed and many other activities occurred. It was my pleasure to document this event celebrating winter.
